FSAE Tripod Axle FEA

Hub

Bearing Surface

Threaded Surface

Tripod Head

The Previous Design:

The previous design used 6061 aluminum for the main body and had carbon fibre and steel inserts wrapped around the tripod head, this design intended to reduce the rotating mass of the system. However, the design was not adequate and ended up failing at the head of the tripod during testing.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA):

The tripod axle is responsible for transferring power from the differential to the rear wheels.

The loading conditions for the tripod include:

  • 520 Nm torque supplied from the differential

  • 5000N Bolt pre-load from the center lock nut

  • 2000N bearing thrust force from driving forces

  • A 3G bump (12000N)
